My favourite and final artwork for the Prehistoric Bayside exhibit. For this painting we wanted a baleen whale scene, but it was one that went through a lot of revisions and a distinctly Thanos-chinned phase. Baleen whales in Miocene Beaumaris were much smaller than their titanic cousins today but are found in abundance such was their success, this pair are balaenopterids and belong to the same group that today includes the humpback, blue and grey whales. I liked the idea of setting it in the shallows and having a marauding megalodon in the deeper waters, one that may have had a crack at this mother and calf pair as evidenced by the scarring on the latter. This painting, like the Livyatan hunting scene had a lot of help from Ben Francischelli and Zev Landes, particularly the lighting which was changed drastically with Zev's revisions.
And with that, we come to the end of my Prehistoric Bayside artworks. Thank you again to Bayside Gallery and Ben Francischelli for the opportunity. It's one of the best projects I've ever been involved with, and I hope my contributions sparked some joy and curiosity about this incredible fossil site.
